Grinding tools-flap disc

Flap disc is a grinding tool. It is a porous object formed by many small and hard abrasive grains and binders. The abrasive grains are responsible for the grinding work and must be sharp and have high hardness, high heat resistance and high toughness. Commonly used abrasives are alumina and silicon carbide. Alumina abrasives have high hardness and good toughness and are suitable for grinding steel. Silicon carbide abrasives are harder, sharper, and thermally conductive, but they are more brittle and suitable for grinding cast iron and cemented carbide.

For the same abrasive wheels, the surface roughness and processing efficiency of workpieces are not the same due to different abrasive thicknesses. The coarse abrasive grains are used for rough grinding. The finer abrasive grains are suitable for fine grinding. The coarser the abrasive, the smaller the particle size.

Binder acts as a bonding abrasive. Commonly used are ceramic binders, followed by resin binders. Different binders are selected, which affects the corrosion resistance, strength, heat resistance and toughness of the flap disc.

The harder the abrasive grains are bonded, the more difficult it is to fall off the flap disc. It is called the hardness of the flap disc, that is, the difficulty of the abrasive grains on the surface of the flap disc falling off under the action of external force. Easily falling off is called soft, otherwise it is hard. The hardness of the flap disc and the hardness of the abrasive are two different concepts. The surface of the workpiece to be ground is soft, and the cutting edges (edges) of the abrasive grains are not easy to wear. In this way, the abrasive grains can be used for a longer time. Conversely, a low hardness flap disc is suitable for grinding workpieces with high hardness.

The flap disc works under high-speed conditions. In order to ensure safety, it should be inspected before installation, and there should be no defects or cracks. In order to make the flap disc work smoothly, a dynamic balance test should be performed before use.

After working for a period of time, the surface space of flap disc will be blocked by abrasive debris, and the acute angle of the abrasive will be dulled. It must therefore be trimmed to restore cutting capacity and shape. The flap disc needs to be trimmed with a diamond pen.
